How far the womenââ¬â¢s suffrage movement was responsible for women being granted the vote needs to be judged against other important factors such as the First World War, political changes and changes in other countries. By 1914, there 56 different groups of womenââ¬â¢s suffrage with 300,000 members. The Suffragists (NUWSS) by 1910 had over 21,000 members. It consisted of mainly middle class and liberal links, but also working class members. The suffragists were a non-violent group, who used tradition actions in help to gain the vote. They gained support from MPs shown in a series of Private Members Bills. The Suffragettes (WPSU) employed 98 women office workers in London. They were associated with upper class, but also working class support. They went by violent, militant actions. Their use of violent actions lost sympathy and support from much needed supporters. In 1903, womenââ¬â¢s suffrage was put back on the agenda after parliamentary lull in 1897-1907. It is clear both groups had positive and negative effects. There are two views on the impact the First World War and the work of the women during this time having the influence on women gaining the right to vote, these views consisted of the traditional view, historian John Roy claims: ââ¬Å"Women proved by their work that they deserved the vote equally with men. Thus their war efforts succeeded where the Suffragette campaign failed. â⬠The other view point was the revisionist view, historian Martin Pugh claimed that saying that the First World War was the most important factor is too simplistic as after 1918, women were removed from wartime employment. As well as this, in the 1920s the theory that ââ¬Å"a womenââ¬â¢s place is in the homeâ⬠was as strong as ever. Politicians changed their minds as the existing law excluded soldiers from voting due to lack of long term residence. This could not continue after the war. If the law was changed, women had to be included as they had worked hard too. Enfranchising soldiers gave the politicians a way to climb down on female votes. Ultimately, this is very important as MPs are the only people who can actually change the law. In May 1915, the Liberal Government became a coalition. MPs that were pro-suffrage were included in the new Cabinet such as Balfour and Arthur Henderson. In December 1916, Asquith was replaced by pro-suffrage PM, Lloyd George. The Coalition Government removed the strict divisions between the parties and encouraged cooperation. MPs felt more confident if they granted 8 million women the vote as they would not all vote for one party through gratitude. There were advances in other areas such as education and law. There was important progress in education. In 1897, first womenââ¬â¢s colleges were founded at Oxford University. As well as this, there were important changed in law, such as the increasing acceptance of divorce, 2 royal commission reports in 1912 sought to have women and men give the same rights and also improvements were made to the rights over custody of children. These changes forced MPs to take calls for the vote seriously. Events in other countries were another factor which helped the womenââ¬â¢s suffrage movement. Other countries had granted universal suffrage such as; New Zealand, Finland and Australia ââ¬â this put pressure on the United Kingdom to keep up. Britain was presenting itself as the ââ¬Å"mother of democracyâ⬠in First World War propaganda so it was an embarrassment to be less democratic than other countries. In December 1917, Communist revolution in Russia led to a desire to strengthen parliamentary democracy in the UK. Votes for women would include them in the democratic process. Women won the argument and were granted the vote. Ever previous opponents, such as Asquith, by 1914 had to accept that the time had come to give women the right to vote. The womenââ¬â¢s suffrage groups had raised awareness of the issues. Historian Martin Pugh said that: ââ¬Å"Male prejudice against women melted in the face of revelations about their capabilities during war time and their contribution to the war effort. ââ¬Å" In conclusion, although evidence is incomplete, it would appear that womenââ¬â¢s suffrage would not have succeeded without consistent campaigning of the pre-war years. From the mid 1860ââ¬â¢s a wide range of methods were used to persuade the government and the public of the justice of the cause. Perhaps it was the fear of a return to militancy of pre-war years which forced the government to include women in a franchise bill. However, events during the war were undoubtedly important. Historian Paula Bartley had noted that ââ¬Å"neither the view that women achieved the vote because of their pre-war campaigns nor the view that women achieved the vote because of the war is ultimately sustainableâ⬠. In other words, a combination of factors were responsible for the achievement of the female franchise in 1918.

There are many aspects to a relationship that will make it strong or long lasting. Looks may seem to be important but in the long run they prove not to be. Looks can be changed through surgery and can fade with age. There are four qualities that should be found in a good strong relationship. These four factors will never change no matter what kind of relationship one is in or what one looks like. The four factors that make a good relationship are commitment, trust, caring, and communication. In any relationship, if any of these four factors are missing then the relationship will not last long. Commitment is an important factor in building a strong and successful relationship. Commitment keeps a relationship together through the good and the bad times. Whether a partner in a relationship is suffering through hard times, the couple if committed will pull through. A strong relationship that is committed will make it through the major and the minor crisis of life. A minor crisis that could put a strain on a relationship could be considered as something simple such as the breaking of a date or one person having no money. A major crisis may be one partner going off to war or having to leave town for several months on business. If the relationship is committed then a couple will survive these crisis. Commitment is a step in building a strong relationship. Marvin Hinton 2 The second part of a successful relationship is trust. Trust is like the "I love you" of a relationship. Trust means that when one partner wants to go out for a night on the town with his or her friends that they will not cheat. When a couple is out together for a night that the other partner will not be flirting with other people in the room. A couple that trusts each other will give each other space to do their own thing. Trust allows a relationship to grow because there is not the constant worry of what the other party is doing. Trust is when there are selected responsibilities that each partner may have and makes sure are fulfilled. Responsibilities such as making sure the trash is taken out or the bills are paid on time. Building trust in a relationship could even consist of making sure that if there is a dinner date that both parties are on time. Even though destroying trust can happen in an instant, building trust takes lots of time. Building trust in a relationship takes time and effort while destroying it could be as simple as cheating or not showing up when a date is scheduled. The third part of a successful relationship is caring. There is no way to truly describe what caring is but it is an intimate part of any relationship. Caring is a feeling or emotion. Caring is a feeling or emotion that cannot be readily described in words but still a feeling. Caring is missing your partner when they are away or being sad when they are not feeling well. Caring in a relationship is an emotion that can only be described using other emotions. When two people care for each other in a relationship form a bond which is hard to break even when common sense tells them that they need to. This bond is so strong that even abusive couples will stay together. The couple thinks that they care for each other enough that the abuse does not matter. Caring is the fabric of building a strong relationship. The fourth and most important part of a relationship is communication. Whereas, in A Woman to Her Lover, Christina Walsh has simply made a political statement through a free verse form; conveying the change in attitude of women during the pre Victorian era. In A woman to Her Lover We see that it is about a woman demanding conditions for her marriage to her future husband. This would seem extremely odd during this period, as women were often treated as subservient. The idea of men treating women as second rate is opposed in the first stanza. This stanza details the rejection of male dominance by a woman. Do you come to me to bend me to your will as conqueror to the vanquished. The vocabulary in this stanza highlights the strong feelings of the woman. The theme of this poem is about love and equality; we know this because of the various words used to indicate love such as: O lover. We can also tell that this is about equality as: I shall be your comrade, friend and mate, to live and work, to love and die with you. The poem follows the structure of a free verse without any constraints this further reinforces Walshs main message of equality for women. However, rather than making demands she feels that she must first ask and also tempt her lover; to stay with her. Moreover the use of the conditional tense throughout the poem makes the poem seem more like a marriage contract. Furthermore, imagery is created in this poem through metaphors: I am no doll to dress and sit for feeble worship if that be what you ask, fool, I refuse you! Her point is emphasized through the use of repetition, Do you come to me to bend me to your will. Moreover, sibilance is used such as skin soft, The repetition of the S sound creates a hissing affect as well as a sinister sibilance tone, which gives us a feeling that she doesnt want to be seen as pure or perfect. In contrast The Laboratory is also a poem renowned for its depth of meanings through the variety of linguistic devices used; in addition it also shares a similar theme of death and revenge to other poems written by Browning such as Porphyias Lover. The tone of this poem is obsession. Grind away, moisten and mash up thy paste, Pound at thy powder, I am not in haste! This just emphasizes that this woman has only one aim which is to seek revenge on her rival by killing her. We see that The Laboratory is an unusual poem whereby we see the courageous female persona is driven to revenge. This is in stark contrast to the stereotypical view of women during the 19th century, who were not expected to have a voice, in a male dominated society. Not only does she seek revenge but also wishes to punish her husband: He is sure to remember her dying face. As thou pliest thy trade in this devils-smithy, this line in the opening stanza to the poem which indicates to us that The devils smithy is a metaphor for the subject of this workshop may be poison and death. This imagery also ties in with the devils work. The structure of this poem is a regular AABB rhyme scheme; this conveys a very jolly rhythm to the poem which is ironic because the subject is quiet chilling about seeking revenge. The language on this poem is conveyed throughout the poem through the use of imperatives Take my mask off! Nay, be not morose! the use of imperatives highlight that she is in control. Furthermore, alliteration is combined with onomatopoeia, moisten and mash up thy paste. To convey a harsh tone, reflecting her revenge and determination, as she makes the poison. Porphyrias Lover, is similar to The Laboratory, In that it is also a dramatic monologue told by Porphyrias lover. The action of Porphyrias Lover commences through the telling of the events of one night- culminating in the murder of Porphyria-by the narrator of the poem. The story is not retold to an audience but seems rather to be replayed in the mind of Porphyrias lover. Browning masterfully builds up tension in the poem by gradually revealing to the reader, through details provided by the speaker, what has taken place. As it also becomes clear that the narrator is mad, it is up to the reader to decide on what extent to believe the speakers account of events. The themes of this poem are attraction, lust and death, as he is attracted to the woman but decides to kill her as he believes he has control and dominance over her, Porphyria worshiped me. From this we can see that he feels he is in command of her. The tone to this poem is negative, The rain set in early in tonight, and madness, And did its worst to vex the lake, Imagery is depicted through the use of pathetic fallacy, The sullen wind was soon awake, which matches the mood of range and anger. Metaphors such as: She shut the cold out and the storm. Makes us think she is a woman sent from heaven. The structure of this poem is ABABB; this very effectively emphasizes the inward turmoil of the speakers mind. This poem is written in a free verse form unlike The laboratory. The most chilling phrase which highlights the macabre theme of death in Porphyias Lover is; In one long yellow string I wound Three times her little throat around, and strangled her. From this we can see that the narrator casually kills his lover, whom he is attracted to; but alarmingly shows no remorse in her inhumane death. Additionally, in The Laboratory the most shocking line which focuses on the narrators deranged state of mind is, Brand, burn up, bite into its grace-He is sure to remember her dying face, the alliterative effect of the harsh B sound expresses the fury and bitterness as she really wants to kill her rival and hurt her husband at the same time so he can remember her death forever. In conclusion to my essay, I feel that the poets studied here have portrayed their views through a wide range of techniques including political statements. In my opinion Porphyrias Lover and The Laboratory are similar as they both share the theme of death and obsession. On the other hand in, A Woman to her Lover, is more about breaking the social norm and standing up for your rights. Each poem has a unique tone and message but they do share some similar techniques.

You need to choose your clothing thoughtfully to stay cozy yet still be able to move easily. For Instance, a three layer jacket, a scarf, furred boots and especially a thermal. These are winter garments that you should wear to keep you warm and to keep out the cold. The clothes shouldnââ¬â¢t be too tight or loose reason being tight clothes inhibits free movement, and loose clothes allow the warm air and body heat to escape. We wear clothing that is creatively designed, and we combine garments in artistic ways. Decorations people use still depend on their native culture. For example: body paints, intentional scarring or binding are for adornment. Ideas can change with time. What is beautiful to us one year may not look attractive at all to us a few years later. The Teacher Who Changed My Life :: College Admissions Essays
Mr. Geis- the tall, bike-riding Calculus teacher who truly made me realize the value of education. As far as academics were concerned, I believed I had always tried my best in reaching my full potential. That is, until I met Mr. "G." He made me understand that I was not going as far as I was capable of Mr. Geis offered to help me out on a couple of problems I had been experiencing with Pre-Calculus, and after a short while he became not only a tutor, but a true friend. I cannot even begin to imagine how many hours I spent in his classroom after the last school bell had rung. Posters of music legends and helpful math mnemonics covered his walls. It was a very spirited room for the lively man he stood to be. He went over the math in great detail while also informing me of how eminently important it was for academics to be my top priority. As an avid swimmer and loyal friend, I was greatly dedicated to the sport and my social surroundings, but Mr. Geis would always be there to tell me to slow down and repeat his key phrase, "Studying always comes first." Although Mr. Geis's main purpose was to perfect my Pre-Cal, he did so much more that he was unaware of doing. He convinced me into believing that anything was possible if I put my mind to it and had a brain-full of determination. If I wanted to be the first woman President, he would say "Hey, the sky's the limit." After the year ended, my goals had unconsciously changed for the better. I believed in myself, my capability, and accomplishing anything as though the world was an open door to endless possibilities.
